Counselling and Psychotherapy at JBC Vitality

Hot stones massage - Jesmond Beauty Clinic review

Sometimes because of one thing or another we need to seek professional counselling.

In my case an accident caused me great concern and I felt that I needed to talk to someone neutral to me. I became increasingly anxious after the accident and although friends and family just want to care for you sometimes they can only make the situation worse. For me this was the case, I continually re-ran the accident over and over in my head and sleeping became increasingly difficult.
I was constantly listening to the people around me and without realising it I was beginning to suffer from post traumatic stress. Although this is very common after an accident I was convinced that the symptoms I was suffering were completely normal and just me being silly. Although the symptoms were normal I still knew that I had to seek help.
Following the weeks after my accident I didn’t leave the house for 8 days and even thinking about doing it was very stressful. I have always been very independent so relying on others to help with food shopping etc. only made me even more distressed. Every night I would feel exhausted from not sleeping the night before but when it came to going to sleep I simply dozed on and off for the majority of the night and even 3 weeks after the accident I still wasn’t getting a good nights sleep.
I had a session with Jane, a counsellor at JBC Vitality, she instantly put me at ease and the room was so warm and cosy I simply felt I could tell her everything and anything in complete confidence. She started off by asking me a variety of questions regarding the accident and how I was feeling and then occasionally she would step in and ask more questions to help elaborate on what I’d said. She also explained about post traumatic stress and how everything I was telling her was completely normal as she has seen many people for the same condition as myself. Sometimes speaking to someone who isn’t a friend, family member, colleague etc and someone who wasn’t there at the time of the accident to pass judgement on the situation really helped me feel better. The time went by very quickly and I didn’t feel distressed or uncomfortable speaking to her.
At first I thought I wouldn’t have anything to say or that I would feel uncomfortable telling her but as soon as she explained about the counselling session and how it would work and once I was sitting comfortably it just flowed. Jane is an incredible calming person with a really soft aura about her. She was extremely professional with me but at the same time always assured me that everything was normal and that everything would get better.
Despite still feeling anxious, time is a great healer and I am slowly letting myself get back to normal things like food shopping, driving and joining in in social situations. Travelling on crowded metros and being is busy situations still panics me but no where near as much as they used to and the main thing for me is that I know that everything I am feeling is completely normal and there is help readily available for me and others in my situation and that alone has helped me move on. My advice is to go and talk to someone because it’s helped me enormously and I am very grateful to Jane for all her help and support.

hot stones massage – Jesmond Beauty Clinic Review

Hot stones massage - Jesmond Beauty Clinic review

Beauty therapy may be a profession more commonly associated with the female of the species, but the latest addition to the team at Jesmond Beauty Clinic is helping to redress the balance and prove that, sometimes, you just can’t beat a man’s touch.

By Rachel McCaffery (Accent Magazine).
There’s no stopping Jesmond Beauty Clinic – a year on from relocating to a fantastic new site on Clayton Road in Jesmond, the salon is biting back at the credit crunch and continues to flourish. Not only has it recently launched an alternative therapy centre, JBC Vitality and launched a new mens shaving site, Signature Shaving, but it’s also taken on new staff and introduced the salon’s first ever male therapist, Sebastian Leuschner.
Working at the salon on Saturdays only, while he completes his training at medical school, Sebastian specialises in hot stones massages and offers three different treatments: a back, neck and shoulders massage, a full-body massage or, for the ultimate treat, the full-body, face and head massage that I was lucky enough to try.
Sebastian puts you right at ease from the very moment you step into the sumptuous treatment room, when he’ll firstly go through a brief consultation.
The hot stones massages are a great way to help relieve any aches and pains. The flat basalt stones are heated to temperatures of between 30°C and 40°C and when they’re applied to the body, the heat transfers to the tissues, warming and relaxing them so that the tension can be dispersed through massage.

The treatment uses knot-busting massage techniques that will work wonders – you’ll feel the strain easing from places that you hadn’t realised were tense to begin with.

The treatment leaves you feeling completely relaxed and revitalised – just what the doctor ordered to help you unwind and leave the headaches of Christmas behind.

And if you’re unsure about the idea of having a man knead those knots of tension from your shoulder instead of a woman, take my advice: don’t be. You’d be missing out on a real treat!

To make the treatment even more enticing, for a limited time Jesmond Beauty Clinic is offering a £10 discount off any hot stones massage with Sebastian. Choose from the luxury body, face and head massage (normal price £78 for 90 minutes), a full-body massage (normal price £66 for 60 minutes) or a back, neck and shoulders massage (normal price £41 for 30 minutes).

Everyone needs a little ‘me’ time

Reiki pronounced ‘ray-key’ is a Japanese energy balancing method. It’s a hands on treatment and great for reducing stress and boosting energy levels. Say no more!! I booked myself in straight away. If your like me stress can come at the most inconvenient of times and effects us all differently. Lots of us have stressful lives and jobs. I don’t handle stress very well and every so often I like to have some ‘me’ time to relax so Reiki is the perfect solution.

It doesn’t matter about your age or state of health and the beneficial changes can take place over a fairly short space of time. It can also help with helping you feel more positive, clear thinking and enjoy a better quality of life.

It’s best to wear loose comfortable clothing. Nothing too thick as it can prevent the treatment from working as effectively. You will remain fully clothed and will lay on a treatment couch. Diane will lay her hands in a series of positions across the head, torso and legs. Sometimes she will hover her hands over your body rather than touching. The idea of the treatments is if you imagine Diane, our Reiki practitioner, as a channel She draws the energy called ‘chi’ through her and into the recipient helping to produce a state of balance.

During my session I saw purple and pink shades and faint images. I felt 100% relaxed and the warm heat from Diane’s hands, the smell of incense and a mixture of the soft relaxing music let me just clear my head of everything and forget those worries because the next hour was about me. Throughout the whole treatment I drifted in and out of sleep but remained totally calm. I particularly wanted help with dealing with stress as I tend to carry anxiety’s around with me forever. Ive had 3 Reiki sessions so far and would highly recommend it to anyone who likes some time out to just do nothing. It’s great for everyone and as ive said before can be used as a treatments for a variety of reasons. In my opinion everyone should book a quick  30 minute session on their lunch break to help them focus on the week ahead and let go of those work/family worries.

Reiki can have different effects on different people. Not everyone will see images or lights but I can assure everyone that deep relaxation a feeling of inner calm and serenity will be felt.

A session last 1 hour and costs £40, to book please visit www.jbcvitality.co.uk or call 0191 281 4277.

Until next time,

Breanne

Needles…but no pain!

As a sufferer of back pain I decided to try something different… Acupuncture.

Acupuncture for back pain relief

Acupuncture can be used for a variety of reasons and I was surprised to hear that it can help with fertility and can be used to induce the mother if she is past her due date. I always thought acupuncture was for muscle tension or to increase circulation. My Aunt had always told me to try it as I have been to lots of different osteopaths but it had never seemed to help me all that much. The last time I had very bad back ache I decided enough was enough and booked myself in with Sam.
Sam talked me through the process and even demonstrated on my hand with one of the needles to prove to me It wouldn’t hurt as I’d always been apprehensive about the thought of needles. He was right though I was making a fuss about nothing as It didn’t hurt one bit. As I was having the treatment on my back I had to remove my top half of clothing. Instead of laying on the couch I sat in front on the couch and rested my elbows and arms on the couch so that my posture was nice and relaxed. He then explained exactly where the tension was and where he would be putting the needles.
Chinese Philosophy suggests that our body’s contain two opposing forces called yin and yang and when these forces are in balance then the body is healthy but sometimes the energy called qi ,which flows through the body’s pathways called meridians, which keeps the yin and yang balanced can become blocked which can lead to illness. There are around 2,000 acupoints on the body and the idea is that by stimulating these points with the acupuncture needles you can relieve the blockage and allow the flow of energy to continue through the meridians allowing the body to heal. Once the needles were in I could feel a slight tingling, nothing painful, and I got to relax for around 20-30 minutes before the needles were removed.
Once the needles were removed I could still feel the tingling and where the needles were my skin was very warm a bit like when you apply deep heat. After a couple of hours I felt like a whole weight had been lifted from my shoulders, literally, as the tension I had been carrying around had totally disappeared.
Regular treatments are suggested to help maintain the body’s natural flow and Sam is currently offering first treatments half price. So if you feel like you too would like to be relieved from those annoying aches and pains then visit www.jbcvitality.co.uk/acupuncture

Nutritional therapy – a real eye opener!

Image of healthy food

In the past I’ve trailed the book shops and internet looking for a diet that can make me skinny over night! In reality this won’t happen. I’m a sucker for eating out and with my lifestyle I like my ‘quick fixes’. I’m always making excuses for my weight and always saying ‘diet starts on Monday’ of course when Monday come around it’s ‘next week’. In the real world any diet has to be committed to for you to see the results but not all diets have to be hard-work or ‘rabbit food’.

In all honesty I’d never heard of a Nutritional Therapist and if I had I’d never given it a second thought but I tell you something for all you yo-yo dieters like myself its well worth it. I booked in with Helen for my consultation when she went through a checklist of all sorts of things like allergies, current diet, how I feel, lifestyle and so on and then asked me to draw up some ideal goals. Of course I said I want to loose at least 1 and 1/2 stone by Christmas (mainly to make room for my Christmas turkey without looking like the Christmas turkey). I would like healthier looking skin and more energy. From this information she then asked my to keep a 4 day diet diary that she could then analyse using a fantastic software package she has. I was completely honest in my diet diary because it had come to the point where I needed change and fast!

I met up with Helen a few days later at JBC Vitality to discuss my ‘food calculator’ with her and I was amazed. I never realised how much food affects the way we look and feel. For instance I got immediate answers as to why I never loose any weight and believe it or not my calorie intake was 450 below the recommend guidelines and if you’re like me you’d think well surely I’d be losing the odd pound her and there but it wasn’t because it wasn’t my calorie intake that was affecting my weight. I found out the answers to my dry skin problems. Everything was so much clearer, I could see exactly what I was eating and how this was effecting me, simple, all in one small folder. Brilliant!

Helen offers sessions for IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), weight loss, skin problems, energy levels and lots more and to be honest there isn’t really anything that she cant help you with.

I am now waiting for the recipes that she is going to draw up for me and I’ll give you feedback on them when they arrive.

More info on Helen and Nutritional Therapy can be found at JBC Vitality an alternative therapy clinic based in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Using hypnotherapy to conquer phobias

Now I don’t know about you but my assumptions of Hypnotherapy was someone taking control of me and my actions and making me do strange things and then I’d wake up in a room of people laughing hysterically at me clucking like a chicken. Although some Hypnotists can in fact do this, Hypnotherapy is completely different and can be used to achieve fantastic results in areas such as weight loss, quitting smoking and overcoming fears etc.

During my consultation with Judi she asked me a range of questions abut my lifestyle, fears, childhood and so on. She then asked me exactly what it was that I’d like to achieve from the sessions. I have a strong phobia/fear of switches, not looking at them or touching them, simply worrying that they are not switched off and that the toaster may spontaneously combust! Leaving the house on a morning or evening would be a nightmare as I would literally have to go around and check each switch three maybe four times before leaving the house and even then I wouldn’t be convinced they were off. The best thing about the consultation was that I knew I didn’t have to feel silly or embarrassed about my phobia as she’s heard them all before and that alone made me feel better about myself. I think sometimes just being able to talk about something that bothers you without being judged can really help.

The next day I had my first hypnotherapy session and I was completely open minded as I didn’t want to let any preconceptions get in the way. Judi had explained to me that the session would be very calm and relaxing and she wasn’t wrong.

During the session I lay on a nice comfy bed with some relaxing music playing while Judi talked calmly and softly to me. Throughout the whole hour Judi talked to me about all sorts of things and sent me on journeys to nice places and the experience was peaceful and calming. Although everyone will feel different things and will have different experiences to me, I can only describe the feeling like floating, like being in a swimming pool of warm water and slowly lifting my legs off the floor and pushing myself up into a floating position and just staying there, completely relaxed, with nothing that could hurt me. When the session was over she asked me how I felt and reassured me that there would be no side effects to the session and that even though I may not remember everything that was said it didn’t matter because subconsciously my brain would have taken everything on board. After a chilled glass of water and a few minutes to gather my thoughts I could continue with my day as normal.

Although I still have my fear of switches I can now eat my toast before switching off the toaster and unplugging it at the wall without the overwhelming worry that I used to get. A number of sessions will be needed to cure my phobia completely but I would definitely recommend hypnotherapy to anyone who suffers from something they’d like to get under control. For me, my phobia was controlling my life to the point that I thought there was nothing that could help me so I am eternally grateful to Judi for her hypnotherapy sessions and I will keep you posted on my progress.

Everybody will experience Hypnotherapy in different ways but Hypnotherapy can be used as a therapy for nearly everything so my advice would be don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

JBC Vitality alternative therapy clinic

JBC Vitality alternative therapy clinic

I remember reading ‘Slowing down to the speed of life‘ some years ago, a book about simplifying your everyday life by using your mind and thoughts to ‘foster a sense of mental calmness’. It’s a very good read, containing many common sense and easy to use ideas but often a real balance in life requires a combination of therapies that treat the physical and spiritual as well as the mind.

This is what we’re trying to achieve at JBC Vitality, bringing together a range of experienced practitioners and therapies that delight the senses and relax the body.

We treat the body as a whole by looking at your lifestyle, emotions, diet and concerns before recommending a course of action to help increase your sense of wellbeing, reduce stress levels and generally make you feel good inside and out!
